An archive in motion to explore memories and mementos: Start your own research into individual lives and whole family histories in their historical context. What could we learn about our lives today?
The Family Album is an interactive media wall that SCHNELLE BUNTE BILDER developed for the permanent exhibition of the Jewish Museum Berlin. It opens up the museum's collection of family estates. Over two decades the museum received more than 1,600 of them from donors: descendants of Jewish families who had lived in Germany and who emigrated or were deported under National Socialism.
For the installation we worked with a selection from ten of these estates. On a screen five metres wide, visitors can look through more than 460 items, among them documents, photographs, everyday objects and artworks.
Every object is a particle in a particle system. All of them drift across the wall, so the archive stays present as a whole instead of sitting behind a menu. Touching an object pulls it out of the flow, enlarges it and opens its detail information. The wall reads many touch points at once and keeps track of each one, so several visitors can use it side by side, each following a different family through several generations.
We developed the concept, the interaction design and the software. The installation runs in VVVV. Editorial control stays with the museum: texts, metadata and the object selection are maintained by the curatorial team itself, so the wall can be corrected and extended without a software update. Everything is available in German, English and Hebrew, with the page-turning animations mirrored for right-to-left reading.
